About Dr Bill Dean

Dr Bill Dean began practicing urology in 1979 and retired from practice in 2011 to begin a complementary medicine fellowship at the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico He has chosen the use of social media to reach out to the many who are interested in exploring an effective systematic approach to IC that is different to what is presently offered by traditional urology practices This can lead to helping people implement the practical applications of this knowledge either with one on one interaction or with support groups New information that can be used to improve health requires changes in habits which are not supportive to change “When the current allopathic healing approach doesn’t have an answer Ayurveda can certainly shed light and help with difficult clinical problems This is because of how the 2 models do their healing” Early in his budding urology career as a resident he researched a condition called chronic urethritis in women Now in retrospect this was his beginning study of IC since it is labeled so many different ways Dr Bill became interested in the complementary medical discipline of Ayurveda with the Chopra organization in 1995 This introduction showed him the science behind the discipline that was grounded in modern physics In 2000 having his own medical problems he sought help at the Ayurvedic Institute and over the years has watched his health dramatically improve Chronic edema from varicose veins cleared, longstanding bowel issues gradually resolved with resultant improved decreased bone density, clearance of longstanding skin lesions, and an improved healthy understanding of relationships He realized tools and techniques that could be used to reverse the disease process But what was startling was that he began seeing healing in a more complete way This improvement in his health brought enthusiasm to use some simple therapies in his urology practice for IC since there were no consistently good results with standard therapies in urology In 2005 he wrote a paper on the results of a study showing the improvement of men women and children using an Ayurvedic nutrition and aloe The results are reported at icdiet.com [http://icdiet.com/] In 6 weeks 91% of the patients had a 50% reduction in symptoms This was indeed exciting and energized Dr Bill to continue expanding on this approach to healing In the ensuing years of practice he continued to help his patient’s pain with what he now calls an energy science of healing This led to the 2010 publication of Foods Heal: Why Certain Foods Help You Feel Your Best [http://bit.ly/cIk3nZ] which uses the nutritional model to show the differences between the current matter science medical discipline and the Ayurvedic or what he terms the energy science medical discipline Says Dr Bill “Many debilitating diseases in the West are not adequately managed since in the matter science medical model the origins of disease are not well understood The energy science medical model has room for how diseases in the body begin This is the key to helping with these debilitating conditions that we have today” So Dr Bill wants to show people who come to him how this energy science of Ayurveda can heal IC “That’s a tall order” he says, “but with my past experience and what I have learned during my fellowship it is definitely possible if IC sufferers want to take on the challenge” Dr Bill is married and has 3 children and 5 grandchildren

IC and Meditation: Why It is Beneficial in Healing

Nature as Healing Healing is a process that is poorly understood in our Western culture  From an energy science point of view it requires time because it’s a release of accumulated toxicity which takes time  The major interfering stumbling block in the process of healing is the mind

Seemingly time isn’t a commodity that much of us have in this Vata whacked…ie excessive movement… society in which we live but if real healing is going to happen it will require that a person decides on the part of herself to spend time to do the work

Whether it’s reading a blog or doing a healing activity for oneself, it’s consistency that counts  One may find that there doesn’t seem to be anything there for them one day but when they keep coming back they continue to find value in their activity

How the Mind Interferes in Our Healing

The most influence in healing is the mind because it prevents us from trusting the process and moving ahead with treatment plans

Change  Nor do we understand often what is required of us taking on energy science healing  Change in nutrition, change in lifestyle behavior patterns, doing unusual therapies that are foreign to us…these make the mind unsettled and want to run away, distrusting the process being suggested

Unknown journey  Healing is in and of itself an unknown  This can be very unsettling for the mind and most of us because as we drop our toxicity and imbalances, new states present themselves  The once comfortable steady state of disease is not so steady which can be a good thing  New experiences will occur and because they are out of the realm of our day to day experiences it freaks us out  At times we yearn for no change  Having said this, this change is slow and not herky-jerky and once we settle into this new way of doing things it’s exciting seeing our old disease state dissolve into new areas of comfort

Pain  Another reason that the mind interferes is because of pain particularly if an accentuation of the pain occurs with treatment  This is obviously a real problem that causes the person to freak out about the therapy but it’s nothing but a release(below)  This will immediately send a signal to the mind of distrust and anxiety  It will make the mind run and distrust  But if the practitioner is able make adjustments things will get better and healing can occur

Release  Who hasn’t done a yoga session without experiencing some element of discomfort in the stretch?  But this experience is simply a release of old patterns of holding the body in space  When we get used to this experience we are not so fearful of it

Real healing takes time  Energy science healing is not like modern medicine healing(matter science healing)  The latter gets us out of tight jams such as cancer, car wrecks, and suicidal tendencies  But it doesn’t answer the major problem of chronic disease  The word chronic disease has a specific meaning here  It relates to a significant amount of time that it has taken to develop and express itself  If someone has vein distention seen on the legs(varicosities) it implies that the microscopic veins have been distended for a long period of time  It also implies that it will take a long time of treatment to deal with the problem  Most people realize this time relationship but the mind interferes

Meditation as a Resource

The mind is the fastest moving vehicle in the body  If it is always moving fast, it makes us impatient, undecided, and upset  If treatment is not progressing fast enough or things seem to get worse, the mind will stop us on our healing journey

The use of meditation is a way to quiet the mind  It stabilizes the mind energy field and allows us to witness the mind as it really is…an petulant, impatient, and confused child  Meditation quiets the mind so we can have better clarity and see what we are doing for the long haul

IC and Ways to Reduce Inflammation

Pelvic nerve plexus 1The IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia) is caused by a pelvic neuropathy from an energy science point of view  What this means is that abnormal vibrational frequencies from the gut infiltrate the nervous tissue in the pelvic complex of nerves to produce symptoms in the bladder, vagina, prostate, and distant organs as in fibromyalgia

These abnormal vibrational frequencies or qualities are given names which we are familiar…hot, light, dry, mobile, static, sticky, and sharp  These match the symptoms that all people with the IC bladder pain syndrome experience and report to their physicians  The symptoms are a result of these qualities occupying the pelvic nerves leading to organ symptoms  And this model of disease has been articulated by current IC medical researchers but because the matter science human model cannot take this neurological process any deeper they are left with the inability to treat the IC bladder pain syndrome

Ways to Reduce Inflammation

Rose petal jam…pacifies Pitta in the heart and prana Vata and cools the system

Rose is renown for its cooling effects and the energy science shows us why that’s the case

Sesame crunch

Refined sugar cravings are addictions  The body however is energetically looking for more energy substrate called soma  Refined sugar provides the soma but at the price of addiction  Sesame crunch provides soma without the addictive quality

Avoid onions/garlic…kills friendly bacteria, replace with cabbage and brussel sprouts

80/20 water/homemade yogurt with soma salt and Pitta masala

Green Composite Protein Recipe

This is an alkalinizing diet that reduces acidity in the GI tract which is the source fo inflammation It is a cornerstone to begin removing inflammatory sources for the GI tract

Early bedtime…go to bed 30m b4 anticipate going to bed…go at it slow

Antiinflammatory Tea

Mustard FlowerFrom an energy science view painful IC flares and bladder pain are a result of inflammation in the urinary channel(UT) since too much of hot produces inflammation.  Interesting isn’t it that the words burning and flare are used to describe what is physically going on?  I wrote a while ago about the use of the antiinflammatory cocktail using pomegranite juice and aloe vera gel and several of you have contacted me to tell me how helpful this has been.

So here’s another antiinflammatory drink!   This time a tea made from cumin coriander and fennel(CCF) seeds   Due to the cold energy of these herbs they also can be benefiicial in dealing with excess hot in the UT   Create a stash of seeds by placing equal amounts of cumin, coriander and fennel into a ziploc bag and shake it so it’s well mixed   From your stash you can draw one teaspoon and steep in cup of hot water   Or if making a thermos to carry with you during the day placing enough in the thermos for the amount of hot water that will be placed   The tea may need diluting if it gets too strong at the end of the day

Spices = Herbs = Medicinal Effects

Your kitchen’s spice drawer is a medicine cabinet and using spices skillfully over time can produce positive medicinal and physiologic effects  But the converse is also true   If you are using spices randomly and for flavor alone there can be adverse consequences   For example, most spices are heating so they can be provoking if you have IC   Or another example is the use of salt – too much leads to water retention

In general the value of spices is that they buck up our digestive fire or enzyme system responsible for digestion, absorption, and elimination  This is why for us in the northern hemisphere at this time of year the use of spices is important because our digestive strength gets diminished

Cumin coriander and fennel uniquely have an energetically cold effect to the physiology when using them and so are particularly useful in dis-eases with lots of inflammation with poor or impaired digestive strength   Cumin(not to be confused with curcumin from tumeric) is a unique digestant in that it bucks up digestive strength but brings balance to the GI tract   Coriander seeds come from the plant we get cilantro   The use of the fennel bulbs in the fresh vegetable section can give you a double whammy if you cook with it as a vegetable

Another interesting aspect of CCF is that all 3 herbs resonate with the UT   They are specific to the UT channel and therefore bring their cold quality to the UT mucosa

Making CCF Tea

If you have a lot of heat already(hot flashes, burning in the pelvis) then reduce or eliminate the cumin which is hot  So put an equal amount of each seed in a ziploc bag(unless you’re eliminating or reducing cumin) mix around in the bag and then use 1T/8oz, boil for 5 minutes and then sip through the day

Of course not all spices are created equally   For the easiest way to find which spices are safe to use go to icdiet.com   There are grades or shades of hot within each herb so within the Favor list there are those asterisked    These are spices that should be used in moderation

Notice the positioning of fresh basil and fresh ginger   These are both beautiful spices to use on a consistent basis to bring about balance in the GI tract and improve digestion

IC and Urological Evaluation

VPK as a circleThe IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, GERD, IBS, fibromyalgia) has many different causes  When everything has been ruled out with CT scan, cytology, and cystoscopy then the urologist is left with the diagnosis of IC bladder pain syndrome  So the evaluation of IC pain is a diagnosis of exclusion

To the astute clinician often the symptom complex of IC stands out from other pelvic pain complexes having nuances that separate them apart from the IC label   Be that as it may it still is important to have studies done to be sure what you are dealing with IC

Then you can be rest assured that an energy science healing approach will clear your problem, symptom free and able to live a normal life

What Happens If You Don’t Get Better

I am so certain of this approach that I can say that if you’re doing this energy science work and you don’t notice a change in your symptoms or reduction in flares in 3 months you should return to your urologist and have studies repeated

I have seen patients in the past who even had a clear Hunner’s ulcer in the bladder by endoscopy and a complete workup who continued to have recurrent symptoms   She  failed to return on appt times and later I found a high grade cancer of the ureter

So it’s incumbent upon you to followup with your urologist despite supportive findings of IC if you don’t get better with the energy science approach

Flare Change

One thing to note about improvement is that the intervals between flares becomes longer, the intensity of the flare lessens, or both  The below diagram shows what happens as you reduce the imbalance of the hot quality

Journey to Balance

As you can see the apex of the graph depicts symptoms of the pain complex represented as spikes but as you make conscious choices to bring about cooling the physiology by nutrition and many other energy science techniques the flares lessen and lessen until they are negligible

Three Things You Can Do Right Now

Go to foodsheal.com right now and take the quiz    Then choose the appropriate nutritional format and print the pdf format off so you have it to follow

Read the incompatable food combination list and print off that file as well and post both on your refrigerator so you can reference them regularly  Incompatible foods produce inflammation

Use aloe vera gel(not the juice) on a regular basis (2T three times per day)   Take it to work, travel with it, and make a ritual out of its use  Why?  This herb reduces the hot quality(think of applying aloe on a hot sunburn) by using the opposite quality of cold

IC and Healing Time

Biig-waveObviously this is a common question posed by those doing energy science work for clearance of their IC complex of bladder pain and possibly IBS, GERD, chronic prostatitis, vulvodynia, and fibromyalgia

As a child you may have asked, “Are we there yet?” and “Now are we there yet?”  So when will this IC be over?   The short answer is, “It’s over when it’s over.”  But to be more specific, in general it takes 2 months of release for every year of imbalance   So if you have had symptoms of IC for 10 years it will take 20 months of work to clear the energy qualities that have accumulated

This would make sense wouldn’t it?  The longer the imbalance the more work is required to get resolution   This doesn’t mean that there will not be improvement of symptoms   The flare intensity get less as the months go by and then the frequency lessens   But real healing takes time!

Are You Particle(Molecule) or Wave?

The body is simultaneously a matter field and an energy field.  The former expresses itself as molecules or particles and the latter as waves of energy   So this is how the energy field expresses dis-ease    In waves

Sound familiar?  The waves are flares that occur in the body.  And they continue to express themselves until you do something about it.  Until you decide to intervene   Otherwise the expression of the excess qualities will continue to occur

Because the matter field is a gross expression of the more subtle energy field, you now can see why dis-ease begins with qualities that then eventually become manifest as particles or molecules in the matter field   This is why I can say with certainty that the matter science will never be able to heal IC with its molecular approach to dis-ease

The Concept of Release

Once the pelvic nervous system and the urinary tract is involved with the energy patterns of Vata and Pitta, the symptoms of Vata presence begin episodic expression of light, cold, rough, dry, and mobile which lead to urgency, frequency and a feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder   Pitta’s presence of inflammation lead to burning on urination, burning pain in the pelvis, vagina, and even rectum due to the sharp, hot, liquid and spreading qualities

These qualities lodge in the urinary tract and express as energy or wave   So the intermittent flares that occur in the body are waves of energetic expression

But what happens when you decide to do things to differently?  You begin paying attention to your day and how you live it   Energy science nutrition becomes important and you start seeing food as medicine   You choose certain herbs that can help with IC and use them regularly

When you no longer support the overexpression of these qualities in the body by the foods that you eat, the body naturally begins letting go of these excess qualities of light, cold, rough, dry, mobile, sharp, hot, liquid and spreading   This takes time but by and by there is lessening of the symptoms that the qualities brought and healing begins to occur

What you see is gradual regression of the symptoms   They do not stop all at once   There is a receding of the complex of symptoms much like the outgoing tide on the beach

Herbal Support for Painful IC Flares

tea tree forestThe use of herbal preparations in the treatment of the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, GERD, IBS, and fibromyalgia) can be effective if we understand the world of herbology

Herbs have their medicinal effects on multiple systems and go where they are most needed in the physiology unlike their pharma counterparts who are made to have specific molecular physiologic effects  However herbs are similar to the effects antibiotics have in that they support the system in correcting the disruption  Antibiotics don’t eradicate the infection as much as they support the immune response to the invading organisms  For example, if someone develops pneumococcal pneumonia, the immune system is not up to the challenge to clear the organism  In that case the antibiotics help the immune system in clearing the pneumococcus from the lungs and in actuality do not eradicate the organisms completely

Similarly herbs due to their specific energetics help support the physiology to clear energetic imbalances that are created by unconscious choices  Even though herbs are thought of as molecules by nutraceutical companies and are marketed as such, the proper use of herbs will not be done effectively until we use them as healing energetics

Understanding the Origin of the Imbalance Being Treated

Probably the most important aspect in the energetic use of herbs is understanding the imbalance that has been created  Any healer whether allopathic or Ayurvedic would admit that you have to know what you’re treating before you decide on the direction of therapy  In the allopathic discipline the physician  through the course of testing comes up a disease label such as cancer, hypertension, autoimmune disease  At times not much testing is required and at other times a lot of testing is needed

Similarly in the energy science of Ayurveda a precise understanding of the energetic imbalance is required in order so that a successful herbal protocol is prescribed  It requires more than taking a pill conjured up by some nutraceutical company but rather an in depth analysis of what is going on energetically based on what is being reported by the patient

It may be surprising to you to hear this but no two cases of the IC bladder pain syndrome are alike  So as we are each uniquely different from one another so we are uniquely different in the way we create our diseases

Absorption of Herbs

An important aspect of the use of herbs is their digestion, absorption, and assimilation  Healthy agni is required for this to occur or they are excreted through stool or urine  The unfortunate problem for most is that the agni is not healthy  What’s more is that if the herbs are attempted to be digested they will be turned into ama which is undigested unprocessed food

This is a serious problem even though as a unsophisticated audience we don’t understand what deleterious effects we are physiologically creating We merrily go along our way popping nutraceuticals hoping we’ll get better when in actuality we are making ourselves sick by our actions

This specific problem can be averted by taking advantage of the agni in our skin through the use of transdermal herbal creams  Also through the use of submucosal delivery of herbs we can avoid the digestive system altogether  Using both types of delivery systems we can physiologically herbs into the system where they are needed for healing

Real Healing Takes Time

Healing is subtle not gross  That is to say, healing using an energetic approach requires observing for subtle changes in the body’s reporting of symptoms and noticing how improvement is occurring  Otherwise we miss the signs of healing and sooner rather than later we say “this isn’t working”So any healing whether allopathic or energy science requires patience and discipline when using a herbal approach otherwise we lose in the end

Another aspect to real healing is to understand that as we get better we reverse our disease process  What this means is that we have apparent aggravation of symptoms as the imbalance is corrected  We hate to hear this but it’s a fact  As we gently release the excess energy that we have created by unconscious choices in the past the net result is gentle symptoms of release

IC and Dementia

Chemical formlaMany commonly used OTC(over the counter drugs) have been linked with dementia(goo.gl/ihYhgc) according to a recent study from the University of Washington  Among these are commonly used drugs used in urology and in particular with the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia)

Oxybutynin (Ditropan) and tolterodine (Detrol) have been used for overactive bladder have been linked with dementia in a recent study from the University of Washington These drugs share a common feature with other OTC drugs in that they affect levels of acetylcholine(ACh), a common neurotransmitter in the body  The short term changes such as confusion and loss of mental clarity are well known to prescribing physicians but these long term consequences of dementia are not recognized

Alzheimer’s disease is a one of early senility or poor brain function and is associated with very low levels of ACh  There is also evidence now that these changes may be irreversible because they produce permanent neurological changes

The relationship to poor brain function and dementia and drugs that control symptoms by lowering levels of ACh should be disturbing to those who rely on these anticholinergic drugs to control their symptoms of the IC bladder pain syndrome

The Study

To evaluate whether cumulative anticholinergic use is associated with a higher risk for incident dementia, researchers examined medical records from 3,434 participants 65 years or older with no dementia at study entry  Initial recruitment occurred from 1994 through 1996 and from 2000 through 2003 and data through September 30, 2012 were also included in these analyses

Exposure to anticholinergic was determined from computerized pharmacy records  Cumulative exposure was updated as participants were followed up over a 10-year period. About 20% of the population was found to be using anticholinergic drugs

During the evaluation period, 797 participants (23.2%) developed dementia with 637 of these (80%) developing Alzheimer disease  A 10-year cumulative dose-response relationship was observed for dementia and Alzheimer disease. In other words, the higher the cumulative anticholinergic use, the greater the increased risk for dementia  The highest risk threshold was taking the minimum daily effective dose of one the anticholinergic agents every day for 3 years

Based upon these results, the authors of the study propose efforts to increase awareness among health care professionals and older adults about the risk of the use of these drugs over time  Even at low dosage or recommended levels chronic use of these drugs should be avoided

The Message

It seems self evident that anticholinergic use that is so prevalent in the IC population keep the use of anticholinergics reduced in treating their symptoms, looking for more alternative ways of managing their symptoms

IC and Sex: An Energy Science Herbal Approach

Heart synergyAs you know the pelvic pain from IC can be so severe that it precludes having normal sexual activity  In a survey done through the ICA organization 90% of IC patients report problems with intimacy   And the majority of women(50-85%) have associated vulvodynia or pain specifically related to the vagina

The fear of bringing on the pain and a flare can lead to avoidance and resulting isolation

Some have reported breaking into a cold sweat due to anxiety just with foreplay   And this can obviously put a severe strain on a marital relationship unless one is fortunate to have an understanding spouse who doesn’t want to inflict pain to his best friend

But for others it can lead to failed relationships or inability to find new ones   As one IC patient told me, “I feel like I’m damaged goods”   Others express a sense of loss of womanhood much as men are fearful of the same for themselves

As we know the matter science approach to the chronic IC problem is unfortunately not helpful since this model doesn’t deal with chronic disease well

But sexual intimacy need not be dead   The energy science can successfully deal with pelvic pain and hence restore intimacy once again

The Energy Science Take on Pelvic Pain

We have discussed the energy and matter science approaches in doing their work   The energy science approach is about balance of qualities; too much hot(responsible for the shearing pain) balanced by delivering the cold; too much subtle balanced by the gross quality(the energy field is subtle and the matter biological field gross);  too much mobile(responsible for the urinary frequency and pain) balanced by the stable or static quality

In energy science parlance we can call these qualities primordial vibrational frequencies

So the symptoms of IC in the pelvis from an energy science view is related to an imbalance of qualities   Now you can see how different these two healing disciplines are when we compare their ways of doing their science

The Energy Science Approach to Pelvic Pain and Vaginal Pain

There are many different tools available from the energy science of Ayurveda to balance the qualities that are imbalanced and localized in the pelvis   Of course the foundation is changing one’s nutritional format and looking at poor food combinations that we have talked about in the recent past

But there are other energy science treatment options to explore  for vaginal pain   Herbal supplements can be used topically such as transdermal creams and submucosal herbal delivery systems

So if we see the mindbody with fresh eyes we will make available to you today

The Inflammatory Tastes

bigstock_Sour_Grimace_1671221The sour, salty, and pungent taste provoke painful IC flares in the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, GERD, IBS, and fibromyalgia)  The reason for this energetically is that all three tastes carry the hot quality

And the hot quality translates in the matter science world to acidity which is hidden away in matter science dietary recommendations   It’s also widely known that cultural diets that favor a more alkaline nature tend to promote within cultures greater longevity (eg Asian diets)

Animal based protein diets  which are high in acidity(fatty acids) demonstrate decreased longevity   From an energy science perspective this is not about vegetarianism; it’s about what increasing amounts of acid loading does to person   Not only does increased dietary sour decrease longevity, but it can provoke painful IC flares

Energetically the sour taste is the acid taste in Nature so from an energy science nutritional view meats rich in fatty acids are not the only culprits

Any acid in food carries energetically the sour taste  Even though we consider sour fruits acidic due to the citric acid(eg grapefruit), we don’t think of tomato(primarily in the seeds), banana, nuts, mayonnaise, red meat(dark chicken, dark turkey, beef, duck, lamb, and pork) and egg yolk as sour   Even though they don’t taste sour, energetically they physiologically produce the effects of sour   For more guidance you can go to icdiet.com or foodsheal.com for a more complete list

The salty taste needs no explanation but using Soma salt which is not heating like other salts makes this the best way to avoid heating

We get the pungent taste in hot chiles and cayenne pepper, chili pepper, and black pepper  All of these types of seasonings and foods will provoke as many already know

From an energy science view all six tastes should be present at a meal for it to be balancing so a wee bit of sour is not a problem as experienced say in a churan

For Pitta Vata(PV) some the sour taste is important in moderation – not all the time but 1-2x per week

For a Pitta Kapha(PK) energy makeup the sour taste should be kept to a minimum

What happens when the physiology sees too much of the sour taste?  Energetically we find inflammation such as seen in IC, chronic prostatitis, vulvodynia, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia in the body and psychologically there is judgement, criticality, jealousy, and hate

As we can see the sour taste can lead to degenerative changes even in PV due to the inflammatory nature of the taste if it becomes excessive for that particular physiological pattern

A simple rule:  Eat according to your specific mindbody energy pattern
