About Dr Bill Dean

Dr Bill Dean began practicing urology in 1979 and retired from practice in 2011 to begin a complementary medicine fellowship at the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico He has chosen the use of social media to reach out to the many who are interested in exploring an effective systematic approach to IC that is different to what is presently offered by traditional urology practices This can lead to helping people implement the practical applications of this knowledge either with one on one interaction or with support groups New information that can be used to improve health requires changes in habits which are not supportive to change “When the current allopathic healing approach doesn’t have an answer Ayurveda can certainly shed light and help with difficult clinical problems This is because of how the 2 models do their healing” Early in his budding urology career as a resident he researched a condition called chronic urethritis in women Now in retrospect this was his beginning study of IC since it is labeled so many different ways Dr Bill became interested in the complementary medical discipline of Ayurveda with the Chopra organization in 1995 This introduction showed him the science behind the discipline that was grounded in modern physics In 2000 having his own medical problems he sought help at the Ayurvedic Institute and over the years has watched his health dramatically improve Chronic edema from varicose veins cleared, longstanding bowel issues gradually resolved with resultant improved decreased bone density, clearance of longstanding skin lesions, and an improved healthy understanding of relationships He realized tools and techniques that could be used to reverse the disease process But what was startling was that he began seeing healing in a more complete way This improvement in his health brought enthusiasm to use some simple therapies in his urology practice for IC since there were no consistently good results with standard therapies in urology In 2005 he wrote a paper on the results of a study showing the improvement of men women and children using an Ayurvedic nutrition and aloe The results are reported at icdiet.com [http://icdiet.com/] In 6 weeks 91% of the patients had a 50% reduction in symptoms This was indeed exciting and energized Dr Bill to continue expanding on this approach to healing In the ensuing years of practice he continued to help his patient’s pain with what he now calls an energy science of healing This led to the 2010 publication of Foods Heal: Why Certain Foods Help You Feel Your Best [http://bit.ly/cIk3nZ] which uses the nutritional model to show the differences between the current matter science medical discipline and the Ayurvedic or what he terms the energy science medical discipline Says Dr Bill “Many debilitating diseases in the West are not adequately managed since in the matter science medical model the origins of disease are not well understood The energy science medical model has room for how diseases in the body begin This is the key to helping with these debilitating conditions that we have today” So Dr Bill wants to show people who come to him how this energy science of Ayurveda can heal IC “That’s a tall order” he says, “but with my past experience and what I have learned during my fellowship it is definitely possible if IC sufferers want to take on the challenge” Dr Bill is married and has 3 children and 5 grandchildren

IC and Mast Cells: 3 Acute Ways to Inhibit Formation and Pain

Pelvic nerve plexus 1Mast cells are part of the immune system and are found throughout the body particularly in areas of inflammatory reaction  It has been found that those with IC and bladder ulcerative changes(<5% of the IC population) have 5x more mast cells than others with IC  Thus those with the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia) may have a common pathway through excess mast cell production  The reason that this becomes important is that the mast cell produces many irritating molecules that may mediate the pain complex that is present

Why Do Mast Cells Concentrate in the Bladder Wall?

There is a functional relationship between mast cell production and the autonomic nervous system which is the part of the nervous system that causes the bladder to function  If the nervous system becomes hyperexcitable or extra nervous then this will in and of stimulate mast cell arousal  This begins the cascade of molecular events that leads to the release of NGF, TNF, histamines, endokrines, and other modulating molecules that cause irritability

So the next question is “Why does the nervous system become irritable in the pelvic area?”  This becomes a problem from the matter science point of view because the model cannot hold the space to allow an answer  But the energy science model can explain the origin of the nervous system behavior based on the qualities that emanate from the lower rectum and come to reside in the pelvic nerves, both somatic and autonomic

This becomes a big deal as it gets to the heart of the origin of the IC bladder pain syndrome

3 Ways to Influence Mast Cell Production by Affecting the Pelvic Nerve Complex

In the energy science of Ayurveda there is a dictum that there is no pain without the Vata energy pattern  So it’s not surprising that all pain syndromes have Vata involvement energetically mediated molecularly through the nervous system

1 Basti downregulates mast cell production by changing nerve plexus irritation  This is a time honored way to deal with Vata imbalance which disturbs nervous tissue  There are many forms of basti both internal and external  Internal basti is done by placing herbal decoctions with oil, usually sesame, into the lower rectum by enema bag  Many people with IC have been poked and jabbed by instruments or tubes going into the bladder  Why would a comfortable placement of a tube into the lower rectum through the anus be such a big deal? So self done enemas can be a major step toward controlling the imbalance in the pelvic nerves and in so doing influence mast cell production and the symptoms of fatigue, cognitive disruption, sleep disorders, mood disorders, and general malaise

2 PeaPure or palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is actually a glial cell modulator(nervous system immune cells) that impacts mast cell formation through its interaction with NGF  Its mode of action is more than likely by affecting the nervous system which induces the mast cells to begin with  Due to the work of Nobel Price Laureate Rita Levi Montalcini who was the first to identify PEA as a mast cell inhibitor in 1993  Based on her work PEA has been extensively used as a analgesic and anti-inflammatory compound since the last decade, especially in the countries were PEA is available, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands  It’s available as a nutraceutical in 400mg tablets

3 LDN(Low Dose Naltrexone) has been shown to be effective in forms of chronic pain syndrome  It is a novel anti-inflammatory agent in the central nervous system, via action on microglial cells and may represent one of the first glial cell modulators to be used for the management of chronic pain disorders  As a daily oral therapy, LDN is inexpensive and well-tolerated

IC and the Synergy of Healing: Adding onto the Energetic Effect

“Ok give me the one thing that’s going to clear this IC thing that I have” typically goes the refrain going through our minds as we try to figure it what to do

Heart synergyAnd while we have been programmed to believe that it’s that one pill, the one operation, the one piece of advice that’s going to turn the corner, it’s really not that way  It may be that in an acute situation such as appendicitis that the immediate action of removing the appendix fixes the problem  But even in that clinical scenario there is the need for doing things after the operation to fully recover  In the management of chronic diseases such as the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia) this process of needing to do more than one thing in order to evoke a healing response becomes even more apparent

The Energy Science Approach to Healing

In order to evoke a change toward real healing the mindbody needs to know that we’re serious about wanting to turn things around for us and move in a different direction  Toward balance in this situation This means that there needs to be not only consistency in our actions but also a willingness to pile on the energetic effects produced by our actions

For example we might feel a tad bit better by introducing nutritional changes that bring about more physiologic balance  Bringing about more balance to the physiology occurs when we stop adding to our imbalances  For example, if we happen to have a Pitta Kapha energy constitutional make up then nuts are not a good choice for us because they carry the vibrational frequencies of heavy, slow, oily, static, and cloudy  When we stop introducing these qualities of nuts into our physiology then the mindbody begins to shed those qualities that we were consistently putting into our mindbody

So we stop adding to the imbalance that is creating our ill health  That’s a good thing…changing our nutrition so we don’t continue to keep ourselves sick  A step toward healing has been made  But there’s another layer  What about incompatible food combinations?  Well, by avoiding them we begin improving our agni  That’s a good thing  Another step has been taken

But then we can add another layer  What about restructuring our day to a favorable time for the mindbody to do certain things…like getting up early to exercise, eating our biggest meal of the day at around noon, going to bed early to take advantage of the night time detoxification duties that the mindbody naturally does if we don’t interfere with them  So another layer has been added to the complex process of energy healing  And we should point out that this healing has not cost anything….only just changing the way we do things

Synergistic Healing

So from an energy science point of view, real healing requires our participation and this layering effect  There are a multiplicity of things to be done to bring physiologic balance and release excess vibrational frequencies that don’t serve us well

This layering phenomenon is actually promoting synergy  It’s not just one thing but the multiplicity of things that are done that bring about the desired effect  Each lifestyle behavior pattern that we add supports and makes stronger the previous pattern that we just put into place  That is, these changes that we make feed on one another creating a grand foundation on which to support the healing of the condition that doesn’t serve us anymore

IC and Prana: 5 Ways to Make Biologic Energy Flow

E = mc2From present day physics the body can be viewed as an energy field or molecular/matter field  Modern day medicine follows an molecular approach to its study of disease whereas the energy sciences of Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine(acupuncture) have developed sophisticated systems of healing to deal with man’s diseases  The areas where the energy sciences have their most impact is in chronic disease and prevention since as we have discussed in the past the origin of disease is well worked out in the Ayurvedic energy science discipline

Because the energy science understands the origin of disease it can be effective in chronic diseases such as the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia)  From an energy science perspective disease is brought about due to an imbalance of vibrational frequencies called gunas or qualities  So in IC the qualities that become out of balance are predominantly the hot and mobile qualities  These qualities become overly abundant in affected tissues producing the symptoms

Srotas:  The Energy Channels

Although the energy science views the body’s anatomy in a similar way as the matter science discipline the channels through which energy flows are arranged conceptually in a different way  The energy channels are called srotas and have specific characteristics that are unique to the energy body  It is through these channels that the qualities move The most common way we alter the qualities of the body is through our nutrition which is why what we eat becomes so important in the management of the IC BPS

But there is a second channel system in the energy body called the nadi system which overlays the srotal system and is more subtle in its expression

The Nadi System

This channel system only carries vibrational energy called prana and is more ephemeral than the above srotal system  Unexplained spontaneous remissions of all forms of disease occur at this level of the energy body  Our nadi system(microcosm) is responsible for the maintenance of our energetic aura(see diagram) and is our connection with the greater energy field(macrocosm)

The common concept shared by these two energy channel systems is agni, the digestive fire, or the ability to take an experience and completely comprehend its meaning  And there are two bridges that connect the two systems such as the autonomic nervous system(fight or flight system) and the endocrine(hormones and thyroid gland) system  The nadi channels are connected to the 5 senses so we can see that doing things to enhance the senses and clear them helps improve flow through them

In yogic classes where asana(posture) is performed the anatomy that is most common discussed and used is the nadi system  Energy nadis such as the ida, pingula, and sushumna are terms often used  There can be healing using the nadi system and the energy science of Ayurveda uses these concepts in therapies

5 Ways To Access the Nadi System

Pranayama particularly kapalabhati because breath use and breath exercises are powerful ways to influence the fight or flight response which is managed by the above autonomic system  From what we have just said not surprisingly this group of exercises can influence agni which is extremely therapeutic in management of disease  Done routinely it can change the course of a disease  Since the breath influences the subtle vibrational energy channels it can help clear the srotas and our aura

Kevala As part of the day in balance(dinacharya) oil pulling has been recognized by Western observers of health that it can bring about dramatic benefits  Kevala influences the nadi channel system and hence has profound energetic consequences to the body

Nasya  This is the application of herbs that are in an oil solution and has direct impact to both the autonomic nervous and endocrine systems  Because this therapy influences both bridges to the nadi system it can have an impact on our subtle energy body, aura, and healing

Karna purna  This is application of oil to the ears which have a connection to the nadi channels and can influence them

Marma and abhyanga  The application of oils to the external surface of the body stimulates acupuncture points that Ayurveda calls marma  These are subtle energy points that connect to the nadi system and improves pranic flow through the channels

IC and the Quick Fix: 3 Ways to Understand the Process

Evolution and healing ICWhat we wish from any healing tradition is a quick way out of our problem whatever it is  The magic pill, the magic operation, the magic whatever  So it is with any formidable chronic disease like the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia)  And intuitively we know there is no such thing but we can still hope that there is something that is going to deal with it  But as a recent visit with a patient who is a gastroenterologist said, “I would have thought you were a crank if you would have promised me a quick solution”

The Quick Fix

So even though we yearn for the quick fix we know it realistically doesn’t exist  We know this intuitively  So if this is the case then what are we actually looking for?

I believe any sufferer of  the IC bladder pain syndrome is waiting for “a trusted way” that will get them to where they want to go…that is, feeling better  And they feel that the “system” has not been that trusted way anymore

But as we have already said there is no quick fix but there is a fix….maybe not a fix but nonetheless a fix  It’s just that this trusted way, this path requires TIME  When time is put into the equation, impatience can become a problem  While we rationalize with the mind, it still wants whatever that’s supposed to happen, to happen quickly

Three Solutions for the Impatient Mind

Journal  Probably from a practical point of view the best way to show the impatient mind that progress is being achieved is to review our journal entries and see for ourselves that things are better  Even the mind’s memory is distrustful of itself but if we can see for ourselves in black and white what has been going on in the past and compare it to what’s happening now the impatient mind will shut up

Realize the ups and downs of healing  As an energy field the mindbody expresses itself as waves and so do the diseases that it experiences  So any disease has its good days and bad days, good weeks and bad weeks, flare periods and no flare periods of the disease process  Name any disease process and it will express itself in waves  The point here is “no discouragement” because of a particularly “bad period”  Keep up the good pursuit toward our goal of ever improving health  Real healing takes time…the correction of an energetic imbalance requires repetitive perseverative effort

Get reliable help in achieving our goal  If we are in a forest and hear the sound of waves crashing on the beach we know we are near  But we have no path to follow  We search but no one has gone there  We can forge our own path and cut our way through the forest, guided by the sounds of the ocean  But we can search for a path that other people have taken and use their experience to show us the way  This is the value of Ayurvedic consultations  They give us a path to follow rather than trying to make our own path

IC and Habits: Habits Are Best Made To Be Modified

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit   Aristotle

bigstock-Puffy-Cheeks-274264We all create habits that can make us sick or make us healthier  In chronic disease such as the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia) it’s clear as in any other chronic disease that poor choices have been made since we are all responsible for the diseases we create for ourselves

But what makes a healthy choice and what makes an unhealthy choice? That my dear reader is the essence of a health system based on a philosophy(energy science discipline) versus a system created by one that doesn’t have one(matter science) If our choices are based on a system that bases its choices on a philosophical relationship with Nature Herself not only are the recommendations always rock solid and something that we can count on but there is a weaving of the recommendations such that all support one another in the pursuit of better health

So we create better habits when we are aligned with Nature Herself  These will always be the correct choices  And when we practice them they become stronger habits that over time will create physiologic movement toward better health  Habits are lifestyle behavior patterns that either create health or move us away from it  So let’s assume that we have identified a habit like kevala(sesame oil swish aka oil pulling) that is worthwhile promoting in our lives

Formation of a Habit Like Kevala

For some swishing oil around the oral cavity is repulsive so there is resistance  But we understand that doing it from an Ayurvedic point of view is energetically valuable since it pulls Kapha from the oral cavity  So we decide to try it  First of all we have to have the unrefined sesame oil near the sink because, and this is important, we want to put this habit in our morning routine  We also have to find a receptacle for getting rid of it after we have done the swish  Does it go down the sink?(not a good idea) Does it get flushed down the toilet?(acceptable as long as we’re not on a septic system…if septic we should have a container under the sink to spit it into once done)

So as we can see there are some steps for us to do in order to set the stage for doing kevala to begin with  Now we’re ready to do kevala….but there’s this resistance about the whole thing  That’s OK  Let’s just give the mindbody a chance to settle in and do it  BUT every morning we’re at the sink thinking about doing kevala  Not yet, not today, maybe tomorrow  But every morning there’s a dialogue going on about whether to do kevala or not

We’ve got everything set up and then one day, the mindbody is ready to DO it  We take a swig of oil run it around the mouth and spit it out  WE DID IT  Voila! the first step of a habit has been created  We actually did it  Now it’s all down hill  We repeat it over and over again and a habit has been born  Notice what has happened  There was a particular cue or situation that occurred to remind us that the kevala needed to be done…the morning routine  But before we even did it we needed to have all the proper materials and thinking about beginning the habit that needed to be done  We needed to prepare the mindbody

Refining Habits:  The Journey to Better Health

The best thing about habits going forward is that there are made to be modified  Oh maybe we’ll do the kevala before brushing the teeth  After trying it that way for a while we might try it after brushing the teeth  Or maybe we’ll try doing some gum massage with the fingers while we swish the oil around the mouth  Hey this oil isn’t as bad as we thought!  Maybe we’ll try using the tongue to massage the oil around on the gums while we have it in the mouth

We get the idea that once an identifiable healthy habit is formed that playing with it in a creative way can not only enhance it but also begin engaging ourselves in the health benefits of it  We begin to notice that when we spit the oil into the toilet bowl that we notice that the longer we hold the oil orally we see that it’s broken down into smaller and finer droplets until it’s a fine well digested solution  This my friend is a remarkable energy science observation that shows that the agni is strong and well supported in the oral cavity

This happens with all positive health promoting habits that we cultivate in our lives  All we have to do is remain observant

And lastly if we want to replace a bad habit with a new healthy one….we follow the same kevala steps

IC and 2016 Personal Goals: 5 Guidelines for Living Life on Purpose

Ah it’s a new year and time for your proverbial new year’s resolutions  What will they be? Or maybe this year you’ll just forget about it  What’s the use when you have chronic disease like the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromylagia)? Yogi Berra, the baseball philosopher with a great knack for simplifying life and its puzzles said, “If you don’t know where you’re going, you probably wind up somewhere else” This is problematic because it may in the end get us to a place that’s WORSE than where we are right now Yogi Berra On Intention

The Power of Intention

The most powerful force in the energy field is intention because it produces direction for the mindbody

The value of resolutions is that they provide intention or direction  It’s not so important whether they’re achieved but rather that they are stated repeated

Intention grows with repetition  The mindbody is always eavesdropping on your thoughts  Always listening to your desires and intentions  If you dont have intentions then the mindbody doesn’t go anywhere  It stays where you are because that’s what your thoughts are going….no where  But if the mindbody hears a direction, focus, intention it will gear to take you there

Now it may not take you there right away  That’s really a problem of our impatience  We literally turn into what we think, believe, and feel  By and by the mindbody hears we are serious about this intention and it will indeed take you where you are intending  Repetition repetition repetition  This sets the stage for success with your intentions

Some Intention Setting Guidelines

Think them and then ink them  There’s something magical about writing down your intentions(aka resolutions) because they are much more likely to be realized if you do soMaharishi-Mahesh Intention

Review them every day so life’s distractions don’t interfere with the direction

Make your intentions very specific  Saying you want all of your symptoms to go away really won’t work very well….but setting the intention about

Put your intentions in the positive and present tense  “I don’t want to eat peanut butter(coffee etc) anymore” can be replaced by “I want to find a nutritional replacement for peanut butter”

Meditate and journal  The value of meditation is to help focus one’s attention on the present  There are different forms of meditation….some actively work at quieting the mind and that’s good but combining the quieting with focus about a particular problem like the  IC bladder pain syndrome helps one link your desire of healing the problem with the intention of doing so  Things will obviously come up about the symptoms that you’re having  If you think about them long enough insights will occur  When insights come journal them because it will help with focus and making your intention(aka resolve) stronger  In our previous example “I want to find a nutritional replacement for peanut butter” when repeated over and over again will bring up alternatives that may never have occurred to you before…..or someone might suggest to you an alternative out of the blue that you had not entertained and bring that to your awareness…or you’re shopping at the store and suddenly you begin seeing all kinds of alternatives to peanut butter  The possiblities are infinite

And make your intentions a priority  In and of itself just setting the intention to DO the repetition of your intentions on a daily basis can be valuable

IC and the Power of Mind: Improving Decision Making

bigstockphoto_Dna_Replicating_4043091The power of the mind is becoming more and more significant as research shows that in many ways effects on the DNA can impact our behaviors  This becomes important in chronic diseases such as the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia) because as we know mind is a major determinant in healing

How Can We Improve Our Decision Making?

Why do we chose one way of doing something rather than another way? Does it make a difference in the greater scheme of things?  And which is the best decision when it comes to healing a problem in the physiology?  Is it better to leave it up to intuition or be driven by hard facts?

There are always those times when we get to a critical juncture and want to make a decision that will move us forward  So it’s worthwhile to look at how decisions are made and how we can influence our decisions for the better

It’s clear from current science that decision making is genetically determined…that mind is our DNA  So change your genes to create better mental clarity and change the way you make decisions

How can this be done?  Alkalines of our DNA follow a regular grammar and have set rules just like our languages  So human languages did not appear coincidentally but are a reflection of our inherent DNA  When we are stressed or negative, our biological energy reserves are diverted from the important task of regenerating and repairing the body

We can counteract this cellular starvation by focusing on genuine states of care, expressing appreciation, gratitude, and love  These positive emotions enhance our energy system and feed the body, even down to the level of DNA

The Bottom Line:  Our DNA is Listening

Living DNA substance will always react to language if the proper frequencies are being used  This is why mantra repetition, affirmations, autogenous training, hypnosis and the like can have such strong effects on humans and their bodies  It is entirely normal and natural for our DNA to react to language  And research has shown that we as humans can reshape and even reconfigure their DNA

Meditation helps access the energy body  Our cells are listening and there is a lively interaction between emotions and our cells  We have a thinking body  Breath work also helps affect the energy field  All of Nature is interdependent  Ancient cultures understood this interconnection as a living universal energy field which sustains life and can produce spontaneous healing events that have been well documented

Merry Christmas Gratitude

bigstock-MERRY-CHRISTMAS-hand-lettering-38509714At this very special time of the year, I like to take time to reflect on my blessings – and I have so many:

My beautiful wife Diana and our family  … my beloved friends and colleagues…..and of course, YOU.

Without your warm friendship and steadfast loyalty, none of the things at IC Solutions would be possible.

Please know that I am forever enriched by our relationship

Happy Holidays, and thank you for everything               Dr Bill

IC and Supplements: The High Priced Scam

Tabletten in einem Kopf aus GlasMany with chronic disease like the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromylagia) are looking for some kind of advantage to help with symptoms from their dis-ease  So it often comes to people looking for help with supplements offered from the molecular promised land of the matter science world
The question that’s left unanswered by the supplement salesman is that if you don’t know the origin of the disease in the first place how can you offer a molecular solution in the name of healing  Is there any proof that taking a multivit a day improves health yet?

Addiction and Supplements:  Is It Real?

Presently the molecule rules so people believe that the promises by the supplement world must have some merit  But there have been few if any studies that show major breakthrough results with supplements particularly with the IC bladder pain syndrome  The interesting phenomenon that occurs when supplements become popular is that everyone gets on the bandwagon without questioning efficacy  The result is that the supplement salesman makes profits

Beware of Matter Science Doctors Selling Supplements

A recent diet book published by a popular matter science doctor received rave reviews by the matter science healing community and of course book sales sky rocketed the book to the NY Times best seller list  And of course there was good but repetitive molecular evidence as to why the obesity epidemic was on the rise  Using what would appear to be good molecular logic to explain away the obesity problem is akin to biochemical micromanagement  Eventually the solution became not nutritional but supplements  What?

When you read the one star reviews on Amazon the concern about the book is quite concerning  What was promised was nirvana in 10 days to get you off your sugar addiction which is dubious but what was the complaint about the book by readers  They were concerned that they had to pay an excessive amount of money for recommended supplements yet didn’t experience any improvement in wellbeing
This is just one example of what is becoming a common place theme in the matter science world  Physicians using their credentials to soft sell molecular solutions that they hope will in some way solve the problem at hand

Sorry, There Is No Free Lunch:  Health Is Not In a Pill

Even as convincing is the molecular and metabolic information the point still stands that there is not good data to support the long term use of taking molecular supplements  particularly with respect to specific disease conditions

The nutritional approach based on 1000’s of years of experience shows that the energy science approach if maintained on a consistent basis will pay dividends of progressive improvement in symptoms  And the cost?  What you normally pay for groceries  Probably 80% of the solution in the IC bladder pain syndrome is nutrition and lifestyle behavior patterns

IC and the Art of Energy Cooking: 4 Healing Approaches

gheeAs we have discussed in the managment of the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia) nutrition is foundational to having success longterm  But in the energy science of Ayurveda nutrition is more than just what foods are selected for your unique mindbody energy constitutional makeup  Even though foods are integral to success because they bring about balance to the physiology and prevent imbalances from occurring there is more to nutrition than foods  Where to eat, when to eat, how to eat, why we eat all add to the “what to eat”

As we discussed we have talked about always making a deal with ourselves to sit whenever we eat  This simply allows us to improve the chances of agni doing a good job in digesting whatever we’re eating  Eating our biggest meal of the day at noon is foundational to successful nutrition  Why we eat uncovers that aspect of nutrition about emotional eating as well as overeating

But what about “how to eat”? This covers the aspects of bringing attention to eating of food but also how we prepare foods

The Uniqueness of Energy Science Cooking

One of the objections that I have heard about the energy science approach to nutrition is that you have to be Indian in order to do an Ayurvedic nutritional format  While this is complete and utter nonsense people buy into such false writing because they don’t know any better  And they believe the people that are protecting the matter science approach to nutrition by misrepresenting the energy science

FH Widget 220px1 Truth be told the nutritional formats that are at foodsheal.com can be integrated into anybody’s way of eating because the change in foods chosen means that you simply find substitutes for foods that are aggravating for folks with the IC bladder pain syndrome  If there are problem foods such as nightshades for Pitta Vata then find vegetable substitutes  Another example of this substitution is using sunflower instead of peanut butter

2  One of the basic tenets of energy science nutrition is to cook food in order to predigest  There is a lot of rhetoric about this from the raw food or macrobiotic community but it makes intuitive sense to break down the cellulose of vegetables in order to aid the agni of the mindbody particularly if it’s struggling  Another time that raw food comes up is in blenderized veggie drinks  In this situation the mechanical breakdown of the veggies may predigest but again the lack of heat applied may make this food preparation technique substandard

3 The use of ghee in cooking cannot be overemphasized in the management of the IC bladder pain syndrome because often the Pitta energy pattern is involved and the best way to pacify Pitta is by the liberal use of ghee due to its liquid and oily qualities   But there is good matter science data as to why one would want to use ghee which enhances agni  It is completely made up of small chain hydrogenated fatty acids(most common butyric acid) which does not have to be digested and moves through all the tissues within twenty four hours  This has important ramifications in the detoxification process of panchakarma(PK)

4 Spices have volatile organic compounds(VOC) which when activated facilitates digestion, absorption, and assimilation of foods  Spices are integral to healthy cooking because they augment agni  They are best activated during food preparation by placing them in ghee and heating to activate the VOC  Once activated they can then be added to other ingredients of the recipe  If you have a heavy aroma in the kitchen when activating VOC it means that you have overheated and overcooked the spices

So there you have it  A way to prepare foods so that your mindbody can get the most out of it because you have enhanced your agni in the process of preparation
