IC and Day in Balance

mental energyOne of the foundational therapies for anyone embarking on energy science work to deal with the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia) is to cultivate a daily routine that brings about physiologic balance  Balance from the energy science of Ayurveda perspective means that when you are suffering from a disease by bringing balance to your lifestyle keeps you from getting worse  But more importantly it helps promote healing

I ran across a website that talks about a young lady’s experience with IBS/IC that is worth looking at  The key that strikes me through her post is the need for consistency in taking action and the use of herbs to clear her physiologic imbalance  So just as consistency for nutrition and herbs is important so is it true for our daily routines or lifestyle choices

Some people are blessed in beginning their lives in families that had some form of structure or routine  The main difference in these kinds of routine and the Ayurvedic routine is based on living in harmony with Nature herself and the morning things to do as you will see

Getting Healthy Rest

The energy science suggests that the next day’s tone is set by what you’ve done the previous night  So getting to bed by 10 to 1030 for Pitta and Vata and 11p for Kapha ensures that you can begin the following day rested and fresh….and early between 6 and 7a  Kapha’s should need less sleep so they can afford going to bed later and then waking early  Vata and Pitta should be in bed earlier for different reasons  Vata hypermetabolic state needs more rest and Pitta if they stay up tend to “raid the fridge” for night time snacking

So now we’re up and ready to go for the morning routine  It isn’t as arduous as you may think but all of the steps have important physiologic functions that help the energy mindbody wake up and get ready for the day  A full list of things to do is at the ic-solutions.tv website under Services and Resources  Here’s a link to the page

Ayurvedic Daily Routine

A strong consistent morning routine with attention to particular detail is very beneficial to your health in general and specifically when going through physical challenges  Volume of fluids for the day should be around 50-60oz for PV and 40-50oz for PK and by consuming 20oz in the early am gets you started with bowel activity but also gets you started for the day with healthy volume consumption  Increased fluids consumed around mealtimes is not a good habit because it dilutes agni and if you already have a compromised agni(most people do) then digestion, absorption, assimilation will be affected

Lunchtime should be the biggest meal of the day because the physiology is ready for the experience of food between 11a and 2p  Fruits make a great snack for in between meals and every once in a while just do a day of nothing but fruit or fruit fast

Dinner should usually be less than the noon meal which would be what you could hold in your two hands  It should normally not be later than 8 to 830p

There are other details on the routine  If you have questions you can leave them with this post

Remember

Roger Bannister broke the 4 minute mile world record that had stood for decades  Shortly after he did it many men became sub 4 runners as well  Roger broke through the idea that it was possible  So can you when it comes to IC  It is possible to deal with IC and change your life

Update on Acid Indigestion and IC : 5 Sustainable Ways to Go Beyond Prelief

businessman in anger screaming puff going out from earsAs part of the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia) acid indigestion as manifested in hyperacidity syndrome(HAS) or gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) would not be surprising  This is because from an energy science point of view the hot quality(Pitta energy pattern) is a major contributor to the imbalance that creates interstitial cystitis(IC)…the burning on urination, vaginal burning are related to this quality  The other IC imbalancing quality is the mobile quality of the Vata energy pattern

The Spectrum of Disease

All physiologic disease shows up as an array of symptoms from not so bad to terrible  Patients with occasional heartburn can then begin to have it all the time  This makes it eligible for the disease label of HAS  If it progresses to a sour taste in the mouth or a burning in the chest then it advances to GERD  And if GERD progresses then it can become the disease label of Barrett’s esophagitis

But notice that in all these advancing disease labels one thing remains constant  The hot quality  So in the end these disease labels are related to the increasing intensity of this quality  But wait there’s more from an energy science perspective  The Pitta energy pattern displays the hot quality when out of balance in its functional seat, the liver

So again from an energy science point of view the liver imbalances due to Pitta must be addressed if a patient is having problems with GERD

Reducing the heat

There are a number of ways to go beyond Prelief which like all its molecular relatives( such as over the counter Prevacid and various expensive pharmaceuticals) represent pharma bandaids  From an energy science treatment perspective the alternatives not only provide relief but done properly with other allied therapies become permanent solutions, not bandaids

Wouldn’t you rather have something that is sustainable long term instead of relying on a pharmacological bandaid?  Here are some basic energy science treatments that can bring about control of this Pitta energy pattern of transformation

Avipattikar  This herb combination is an excellent way to get control of raging hot Pitta in the stomach reducing the hot quality

Aloe vera gel  This herb is not only cooling to the small bowel therefore reduces the Pitta energy pattern but because it is effective for Pitta disorders in general it is a good liver protectant  This makes it a valuable herb overall in treating Pitta disorders  From an energy point of view aloe is special because it falls into a special group of herbs called rasayana  This means it is a tissue rejuvenative and restorative of bodily tissues  There are no Western pharma that can make that claim

However there has been consumer concern regarding food additive carrageenan to the aloe gel products on the market  I have gone on record two years ago as saying “not to be concerned” but the below should be of concern

In their report, they explained why even food-grade carrageenan is dangerous, yet how many food companies have continued to unscrupulously add it to their products  According to Cornucopia, animal studies show that “food-grade carrageenan causes gastrointestinal inflammation and higher rates of intestinal lesions, ulcerations, and even malignant tumors”. It can also cause cancer, because food grade “undegraded” carrageenan is contaminated with “degraded” carrageenan (the kind that’s not considered “food grade”)  The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer and the National Research Council of the United States have both determined that degraded carrageenan is a carcinogen. So, it clearly should not be in our food

So I’m can no longer support aloe products with carrageenan and suggest that you look at products particularly tablets but buyer beware  Any readers that have suggestions, please leave a comment!!

Psyllium husk  Using this herb may sound strange as it is used as a laxative but 1t at bedtime mixed with fresh yogurt or with warm water will absorb Pitta in the small intestine and stop the colonic wall irritation

Nutritional format and incompatible food combinations We can take all the herbs in the world but if we continue to take into our bodies the same imbalancing qualities then no gains will be made  It’s like 2steps forward and 3 steps back  If there is HAS or GERD then no doubt the person is a strong Pitta and these conditions would be the ways that they might go out of balance  One should follow a Pitta pacifying diet At the very least one should follow the PK or PV formats at foodsheal.com

Kefir milk  When Pitta is out of control and the hot quality is raging, the microbiome or the gut flora becomes affected  Since the gut flora is an important aspect of agni it’s important to replenish and support this vital aspect to our health  Kefir does this by providing new healthy bacteria to our gut microbiome population  You can get it in the stores or make it yourself by finding some Kefir granules from someone willing to share

Like all energy work it is subtle and the healing shifts occur slowly over months but the good thing is that they are sustainable long lasting effects

IC and Stress: 7 Energy Science Techniques to Cope

bigstock-Elderly-Woman-On-Beach-Meditat-52950844When I read posts from the IC community about triggers for their IC many respond that stress is a common trigger  This makes complete sense from an energy science point of view because the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia) is caused from the provocation of the energy patterns of Vata(energy of physiologic movement) and Pitta(energy of transformation or metabolism)  Both of these energy patterns are involved in stress and engages the control dramas of Vata which is flight(run away) or Pitta(fight) or a mixture of the two energy patterns

Stress and Retraining the Nervous System to Reduce IC Flares

Our reaction to an event in our environment as a perceived threat can engage the flight or fight response  This mental response to “out there” prompts a part of our nervous system named the sympathetic nervous system  The opposing part is the parasympathetic nervous system  It turns out that the former is engaged in times of stress(fight or flight) and the latter is engaged during periods of relaxation

The accumulation of stress events that are not dealt with adequately leads to a heightened level of stress over and above baseline  This increased sympathetic nervous system activity puts us in a altered physiologic state where we are then more responsive to simple stress events that would not ordinarily trigger us(crying child puts us over the top)  This is called “chronic stress syndrome” but is nothing more than a primed sympathetic system that is operating over and above what is appropriate  Done for long periods of time it can lead to adrenal fatigue

Everyone experiences stress in their lives but it’s how we deal with it that’s important  So retraining our nervous system out of hypervigilance or “fight or flight response” and to teach it to be calmer in the face of that “perceived threat” whatever it might be is the key to dealing with the stress trigger that can lead to IC flares

9 Energy Science Things That You Can Do To Reduce Stress and Flares

The energy science of Ayurveda and the yoga tradition state that it’s not just one thing that we do to help deal with stress but a multiplicity of things that we can do to invoke a more calm(parasympathetic) response to events that occur to us in our environment

Nutrition Amazingly when we eat foods that produce imbalance it brings about a minor stressor   Over time as discussed earlier this loads the sympathetic nervous system, raising its level of activity

Herbal support There a number of Ayurvedic herbs that can lend support to the nervous system that are called rasayanas  These are a special group of herbs that can provide strengthening support to an overloaded system

Pranayama  These are breathing practices that can have a calming effect to the autonomic nervous system by increasing the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system which happens to be in very high concentration anatomically in the diaphragm

Nasya  At the upper part of the nasal cavity is a plate that has direct access to the brainstem  Named the cribiform plate this provides herbal access to the nervous system so that they can provide strengthening support to an overly fatigued nervous system

Asana practice Done properly by focusing on bodily sensations, asana practice can be meditative and hence reduce the mind’s tendency to respond in a sympathetic way

Meditation is an energy science tool to quiet the mind  In so doing it produces a parasympathetic response, that is, a calming effect  Done over time(at least 3mo of practice) it will retrain the nervous system so that it is not so reactive to events in our environment

Watching thoughts as clouds   This practice helps us disengage our internal world  At times our thoughts become so real for us that we think they are us!  But we are not our thoughts we are the observer of our thoughts  Thoughts are like hotel guests….they come and go but we as the observer….we never change  When we watch the thoughts come and go as clouds we disengage from the mind

By and by introducing each of these tools can be life changing and help you conquer IC flares  Just begin with 5 minutes and you’ll see benefits and want to spend more time

IC and the Energy Patterns of VPK

VPK peopleIf we want to talk about the mindbody as an energy field then we need a vocabulary or means of discussing the human energy field especially if we want to talk about disease such as the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia)

The energy patterns of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are the energy science’s way of defining the function of the mindbody’s physiologic energy field  Vata is the energy of physiologic movement so anything(blood, nerve impulses, thoughts) that is moving is under the guise of the Vata energy pattern  Pitta is the energy of transformation….it governs the mindbody’s metabolism(broccoli is changed or transformed from one state to another)  Kapha is the energy of stability and supports the mindbody’s structure  It is the most physically express of the energy patterns

We are not aware of these energy patterns when we’re healthy but when there is an energetic imbalance of qualities that become expressed then we become aware of dis-ease  For example, we are unaware of Vata’s movement except when we become aware of dry and rough skin or constipation  These events wouldn’t occur unless the energy pattern of Vata was physiologically increased

In this video I talk about these fundamental energy concepts

IC and 2 Key Energy Science Principles

The healing medical energy science tradition of Ayurveda does its science differently than the current allopathic tradition of healing  Hence there is a different medical approach to the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia)  Since Ayurveda is an energy science it has a different way of seeing the anatomy(VPK) and physiology(agni)of the mindbody  This is quite a bit different than how we see the molecular mind and body from a matter science point of view Both as you know have validity…just a different way of doing science of our biology  Here’s a video I did for the local Seattle yoga community

IC and Getting Out of the Ditch: 4 Things to Remember

Evolution and healing ICThe waves of IC experienced as flares mimics the ups and downs of getting sick  Most people with any disease can relate to the accompanying graph in which the illness acts like a wave pattern…..good days and bad days, good weeks and bad weeks, and even good months and bad months  Anyone who has experienced the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia) can attest to this wave like dis-ease pattern  And why wouldn’t it be a wave pattern since the energy body expresses itself as energy or a wave pattern?

On Way Down the Curve….Healing

So it’s a bumpy ride up or wave like on the way up and it’s done unconsciously….unconsciously because we don’t know we’re making ourselves sick by lifestyle choices

Then there’s the crescendo where flares are pretty routine and expected

But now you decide to take matters into your own hands and begin doing this energy work  Now you begin your way down the curve and you experience good days and bad days, good weeks and bad weeks after a while but this time you’re releasing pent up imbalancing qualities such as hot, mobile, light, and perhaps heavy

So are you getting better?  The energy science answer is yes because you’re not introducing more imbalances qualities through better and more refined lifestyle choices  But these qualities which took time to accumulate take time to release themselves

How Much Time Does It Take?

It’s estimated for those as many as 70% of IC patients that they can get better on their own  This group doesn’t have a great deal of pelvic nerve involvement by qualities so a change in lifestyle behavior patterns may do the trick

But if the qualities happen to involve the deep tissues for a long period of time then it will take longer…..2months for every year of imbalance of the disease….and more importantly interventional therapies beyond lifestyle measures  This type of work requires a multimodal approach…..that is, many different things being done at the same time  And one group of therapies may not be the same as for another person because all imbalances are not created equally  The therapies are individualized to the person having the problem

4 Things To Remember If You’re in the Ditch

You’ll notice that there are  hills and valleys of the wave curve….and these valleys are what I refer to as ditches since you literally feel like you’re crawling out of one when you’re in the lows of it

1  Keep doing the foundational work  What this means is to continue to chose foods appropriate for your energy makeup and avoiding incompatible food combinations, observing bedtime and waking hours appropriate for your energy makeup, observing appropriate fluid consumption for your energy makeup, and exercising daily

2 Realize that releases make you feel like you’re going backwards  This is understandable but at the same time can be disheartening as you want the symptoms to get better with the work you’re doing

3 As you go through ditch after ditch they are not at deep and severe  This is great and makes you feel you’re making progress

4 Get plenty of rest as this requires a lot of energy expenditure  Healing is not easy and requires that the old qualities need to be mobilized and shed   This requires energy

Fortunately most with the IC bladder pain syndrome don’t have to go through what I’ve discussed here  But if you’re far enough along then this is worthwhile information

IC and Kitchen Spices: 14 Balancing Herbs

Large medicinal herb and spice selection also used in magical poThe use of spices is the same as the use of herbs in the energy science model of nutrition and health  The use of spices is the same as the use of herbs  A spice is considered a herb but not all herbs are spices  The spice cabinet in your kitchen if viewed energetically can become a medicine cabinet full of energetic remedies  But just as medicines can help us, some can cause us dis-ease so we need to learn how to use spices properly for our benefit

This is particularly true in the case of the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia)  Because most spices are used to help improve digestive fire, they make agni stronger so that our own digestive process is more effective in breaking down the food, absorbing it, and assimilating it into our bodies as organ(eg, liver and brain) and tissue cells(eg muscle and blood

Spices….Cooling or Heating?  Which Ones to Use?

Most of the commonly used spices in recipes today are heating  Mediterranean recipes call for hot spices such as oregano, garlic, rosemary, and thyme  These spices are not only heating but have the taste of pungent which is composed of the qualities of hot, dry, light, mobile. sharp, and rough  This heating group of spices is particularly good during winter time when our mindbodies need extra heat for digestion of foods

However when your mindbody already shows signs of excess heat as in conditions such as the IC bladder pain syndrome where the symptoms of the hot quality is present in abundance. the above heating spices can be very problematic as most with IC can attest to

14 Cooling Spices

Among the spices there are a group that can be cooling and because of this can be medicinal when too much heat is present  You’re interested in improving your digestion, absorption, and assimilation but not at the expense of worsening your IC symptoms and risking a flare

There are 10 spices or herbs that you can use all the time and not risk too much heat  They are balancing for everyone with high Pitta or too much heat

 Use all the time

Cardamom Coriander Cumin Dill Fennel Mint Rosewater Saffron Turmeric Vanilla  Do some of these sound familiar?  Our common medicinal CCF tea is made from the cumin, coriander, and fennel seeds  Furthermore they are medicinal to the urinary tract  Other herbs you may recognize are mint, dill, rosewater and vanilla  Turmeric is on of the most powerful antiinflammatories in this group and saffron even though expensive can be another great alternative in this cooling group  These cooling spices are used in the detoxifying kitchari  You’ll notice there are no heating spices in this dish

Cooling but use with self evaluation

Cinnamon Fresh basil  Fresh ginger Neem leaves Parsley  These spices can be heating and cooling so should be used with some caution and awareness, testing the spice to see what effects it has on your own energetic physiology  For example fresh ginger due to its liquid quality(dry ginger is really hot and should not be used) can have this heating quality reduced   So ginger tea made with fresh ginger can be medicinal for some but in some situations with Pitta really out of whack, even fresh ginger can be too hot  This is also true of fresh basil  Of the group parsley is the hottest and probably least tolerated

Remember parsley’s look a like in the store Cilantro which is an excellent cooling veggie since it is fresh coriander leaves

If It’s Good Enough for Cancer It’s Good Enough For IC: The 4 Key Ingredients to Recovery from IC

Woman in painNo one with the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia) would argue that having this chronic problem is not stressful  As a matter of fact chronic disease of any form is stressful and wears on the physiology  This is because living with energetic imbalances that don’t allow for the free flow of physiologic energy produces dis-ease

When one is in a state of ease everything including bodily functions becomes easy and unconscious  Urinary and rectal elimination is automatic and almost taken for granted  There is no disruption or alteration of consciousness because the mindbody is just humming along  So stress is the opposite  Small things such as going to the bathroom become monumental tasks and therefore stressful

Mindbody Connection

As I’ve discussed in the past the only way to understand the mindbody as being one is to see the mind and body as both energy fields  We cannot see the mind and body as intimately spliced from a molecular point of view since the mind is primarily an energy field not a molecular field

It’s not surprising then to say that the most molecular refined expression of mind is our DNA  Behaviors and herbs all cause shape shifting in our DNA on a daily basis  So when Canadian researchers have shown that change in DNA(see link below) occurs in cancer patients who took up a 3 month practice of meditation it’s clear that the mindbody energy connection is demonstrating itself

What this says is that reducing the stressful effects of chronic disease is important and the way we can do that is to quiet the mind for 20minutes or more daily  One can choose mantra or breath awareness combining it with SoHum(so on inhalation hum on exhalation)

Multimodality Therapy

As I’ve discussed in the past in energy science work it’s not just one thing that you do that will bring about healing with the IC bladder pain syndrome  Rather it’s a multiplicity of things that are done by the physiology in order to change the chronic imbalances that have created the symptoms  Here are 4 key ingredients in a health plan that can bring about healing and recovery of IC

Meditation is a technique to quiet the mind  In the course of meditation there can be lots and lots of thoughts In this setting these thoughts represent stress that needs to be released  Meditation provides the context by which this stress can be released  The mindbody becomes like a 4th of July sparkler with stress exuding from it

Pranayama as we talked over the last 2 weeks is not only a meditation but also improves agni of all the tissues but also helps eliminate ama

Nutrition that does not bring on more toxicity or helps support burning off toxicity is foundational

Improving and Normalizing Agni is a major part of getting our health back because in chronic illness agni always suffers

IC and Pranayama: An Energy Science Therapy

PranayamaLast week I discussed why pranayama or breathing exercises can be helpful as part of the energy science solution in helping with the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia)  As I have explained in the past, in contrast to the matter science approach to disease, the energy science approach uses a multimodality approach in treating the qualitative imbalances of mobile, dull, rough, hot, and often times heavy

Pranayama as I explained last week burns ama which is a result of poor agni  These breathing techniques each build on one another to enhance the agni of every tissue level in the body  When ama is released from the tissues then the qualities can move back to the GI tract for elimination through various methods

The Pranayama Sequence

The sequence is important as it progressively mobilizes Kapha and ama by increasing tissue agni or heat in the tissues from the grossest(bone muscle) to most subtle tissue layers(nervous) Due to the removal of ama this sequence becomes a form of detoxification  For those of you familiar with pranayama practices these terms will be familiar but the sequence and how the pranayamas are done is what makes this sequence energetically medicinal  For those unfamiliar with these there are places on the internet you can view them or if interested we could set up a demonstration to get you started  Start low and gradually build to maximum number

Bastrika  forceful inhalation forceful exhalation  10-100(5 min)

Kapalabhati passive inhalation forceful exhalation  100-1000(10 min)

Anulom villom forceful inhalation forceful exhalation using alternate nostrils 10-60(5 min)

Agni sar retention with abdominal pumping  5-10 reps

Bhramari  known as bumblebee breath this is done with a specific mudra to enhance attention and the process 5-17 reps

Utjayi  inhalation with right arm raising coupled with forceful exhalation using only the chandra channel 5-17 reps

Shitali Shitkari  breath to cool particularly the nervous system down after heat generation of the above  5-17 reps

Utgeet breath to seal the practice 5-17 reps

A Simple Cheap Effective Way to Help Change IC

Breath techniqueThe energy science of Ayurveda views disease as imbalance of qualities or vibrational frequencies that produce symptoms in specific tissues  As in the IC bladder pain syndrome(interstitial cystitis, vulvodynia, chronic prostatitis, IBS, GERD, and fibromyalgia)the qualities from the gut lodge into the pelvic nerves  These then begin producing the symptoms of burning(hot quality) in the urethra and vagina, urinary frequency(mobile quality) and urgency, and aching(dull and rough qualities) suprapubic pain  This often occurs in an episodic way, the so called flare

Why Don’t These Qualities Go Away?

The qualities lodge into the pelvic nerves(nervous tissue) and fail to return to the GI tract due to toxicity associated with them which is called ama  The reason that ama or toxic load occurs in the first place is related to poor agni which I have blogged about in the past  This is why I have emphasized various agni enhancing techniques such as CCF tea

This sticky gooey substance “gums up the tissues” so to speak trapping the qualities that have migrated from the gut into the nervous tissue

How to Get Rid of Tissue Ama?

In the energy science there are several ways to remove nervous tissue ama but one of the simplest ways is to improve the agni or digestive fire of the nervous tissue itself  If the tissue ama plugging up the works and holding the qualities in the nervous tissue then the simple solution is to burn off the ama or toxic load  Physical exercise in general is a good way to improve agni and hence burn off ama

Breathing exercises called pranayama specifically can stimulate tissue agni and burn off ama hence leading the nervous tissue release of the excessive qualities and send them back to the GI tract for removal

5 Things To Know About the Exercises

1 This is a very specific set of pranayama done in specific way to burn off ama

2 Should be done consistently on a daily basis, first thing in the morning

3 Takes about 30 minutes a day when doing the full sequence

4 How long to see results is based on how much ama is present  Said another way, how long have you been sick?  The rule of thumb is 2months for every year of IC

5 Requires sitting to produce an erect posture

Next week I’ll outline the pranayama sequence that can change your life

This is simple, cheap and only requires your initiative  What have you got to lose except being healthier by doing the exercise?  Too good to be true?  See for yourself
